Meet Coach Carlos Payte, Petaluma Baseball & Softball Coach

For me, coaching has always been about more than teaching a kid how to hit, throw, or catch a baseball. It's about helping young athletes build confidence, overcome challenges, and discover what they're capable of.

I've spent years coaching young baseball players of different ages, abilities, and personalities. Along the way, I've learned that no two kids are the same. Some players come to me wanting to take their game to the next level. Others are struggling with their mechanics, confidence or simply enjoying the game. That's one of the things I love most about coaching—figuring out what that individual player needs to succeed.

My approach is built around patience, encouragement, fundamentals and making the work fun. I want players to understand why we're doing something, not just repeat a drill because a coach told them to. When kids understand what they're learning and start seeing themselves improve, their confidence can change quickly. And that's where coaching becomes really rewarding.

I've watched players go from being afraid to step into the batter's box to looking forward to their next at-bat. I've seen kids who were frustrated with baseball start asking their parents when their next lesson is. I've watched skills improve, but I've also watched kids begin to believe in themselves. Those moments are why I coach.

Through parenting and coaching a baseball player, my ownership of Legends Baseball Camps in Sonoma County, private baseball and softball instruction, athletic development and strength training, I've had the opportunity to coach hundreds of young athletes. That experience has reinforced something I strongly believe: Kids don't need every coach to be the loudest, toughest or most complicated coach they've ever had. They need coaches who believe in them, challenge them, communicate with them and make them excited to keep learning.

My mission is simple: help every athlete I work with become a better player, a more confident kid and someone who loves showing up to the field. If they leave a lesson with better skills and a bigger smile than when they arrived, I'm doing something right.
